A Chiropractor’s Perspective

If your neck feels stiff when you get up in the morning, aches after a day at the computer, or seems to complain every time you check your phone, you’re certainly not alone.

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints, affecting people of all ages and occupations. While symptoms can sometimes be linked to a specific injury, many cases develop gradually over time through a combination of posture, repetitive habits, workload, stress, and everyday activities.

The good news is that persistent neck pain doesn’t automatically mean something serious is wrong. In many cases, understanding the contributing factors and making small changes to movement, posture, and daily habits can make a meaningful difference.

If neck discomfort is beginning to affect your work, sleep, exercise, or day-to-day activities, it’s worth speaking to a healthcare professional for an assessment. Let’s look at some of the common factors involved and how chiropractic care can help support recovery and long-term management.

Understanding the neck and its function

The cervical spine, or neck, consists of seven vertebrae that support the head’s weight, protect the spinal cord, and allow a remarkable range of motion. Interconnected muscles, ligaments, and joints maintain stability and facilitate movement. When the muscles, joints, and surrounding tissues of the neck become overloaded, irritated, or less mobile, tension, stiffness, and discomfort can develop. We regard neck pain as ‘chronic’ when these issues persist for three months or longer and are interfering with daily activities and quality of life.

Common contributors to chronic neck pain

  • Poor posture: Spending hours slouched over a desk or leaning forward while reading can strain the cervical muscles. Over time, the spine may adopt a forward head posture, increasing stress on the neck joints and muscles.
  • Technology use: “Tech neck” is a modern phenomenon caused by prolonged smartphone, tablet, or computer use. Every inch the head moves forward increases the load on the cervical spine, placing up to 20-30 pounds of extra stress on the neck muscles. This repetitive strain can lead to chronic discomfort and reduced mobility.
  • Stress: Emotional tension often manifests physically, particularly in the neck and shoulder muscles. Tight muscles, muscle spasms, and restricted movement can all contribute to chronic neck pain. Stress can also exacerbate postural issues, creating a feedback loop that worsens discomfort over time.
  • Inactivity: Even if we maintain a good posture, long periods of sitting can still lead to problems developing in the neck. Sitting at a desk or driving for extended periods are linked to an increase in neck symptoms.

How chiropractic care may help

Chiropractic management focuses on restoring joint function, improving posture, reducing tension and rebalancing muscles. Treatment is aimed at improving joint movement and reducing restrictions within the spine. By restoring mobility and reducing mechanical stiffness, treatment can help improve range of motion, ease discomfort, and support normal movement patterns.

Chiropractors will also provide exercises to strengthen the stabilising muscles and stretch the contracted muscles to support proper posture and reduce the risk of recurring pain.

Ergonomic and lifestyle advice

Chiropractic care is most effective when paired with practical strategies to protect the neck in daily life. Ergonomic recommendations for improving work practices and posture can help relieve muscular tension and reduce the risk of flare-ups.

Stress management techniques, such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or gentle stretching, can complement chiropractic adjustments. By addressing both the physical and emotional contributors to chronic neck pain, chiropractors aim to provide a holistic and sustainable approach to symptom management.

Taking a proactive approach

Persistent neck pain can be frustrating, particularly when it begins to affect work, exercise, sleep, or simple everyday tasks.

The encouraging news is that most people benefit from a combination of movement, strengthening exercises, improved workplace habits, and appropriate hands-on care. Small changes, applied consistently, often have a bigger impact than people expect.

As chiropractors, our role is to help you understand the factors contributing to your symptoms, improve how your neck and upper back move, and support your confidence in staying active.
