Driving and Back Pain: How to Stay Comfortable Behind the Wheel

Many drivers don’t realise that their back pain or stiff neck may be linked to the way they sit and drive. You may not notice any discomfort while driving, but poor posture and long periods in the same position can cause problems over time.

Many of us spend hours in the car each day. We may be commuting, running errands or taking the children to school. Sitting for long periods can lead to aches and pains, sometimes known as Repetitive Driver Injury.

According to the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), 40% of people say that sitting for long periods makes their neck and back pain worse.

How Driving Can Affect Your Back

Long periods behind the wheel can place extra strain on your back and neck. Staying in the same position for too long can also affect the natural curve of your lower back.

Your driving position can make a difference. The way you hold the steering wheel, position your head and sit in your seat can all affect your posture. Over time, these small factors may contribute to muscle tension, stiffness and discomfort.

Simple Ways to Reduce Driving-Related Pain

You don’t need to buy a new car to make driving more comfortable. A few simple changes to your driving position can help.

Adjust your seat so you can reach the pedals without stretching. Make sure your lower back has enough support. Try to keep your shoulders relaxed and your head in a neutral position.

Taking regular breaks can also help, especially on longer journeys. Get out of the car, walk around and gently stretch before continuing your journey.

You may feel particularly stiff after a long drive. Gentle movements and stretches can help loosen tight muscles. Avoid forcing any movement that causes pain or discomfort.

When Should You Seek Help?

Occasional stiffness after a long journey may not be a cause for concern. However, ongoing neck or back pain is worth getting checked.

A chiropractor can assess your symptoms and look at factors that may contribute to your discomfort. This can include your posture and the way you sit during everyday activities, such as driving.

Getting advice early may help you understand your symptoms. It can also help you find ways to manage them and prevent them from affecting your daily life.

If driving is becoming uncomfortable, you don’t have to put up with it. Our team can assess your symptoms and discuss the most appropriate treatment and advice for you.
